What is the fat percentage of Greek yogurt?

Not all Greek yogurts have the same fat percentage. It varies depending on the type and brand. That’s why they are classified into three categories: whole, low-fat, and fat-free.

Its dense and creamy texture is due to a very thorough straining process that removes part of the liquid whey, which concentrates both the nutrients and the healthy fat in the product.

Whole Greek yogurt contains approximately 8% to 10% fat. This type is made from whole milk and, in some cases, cream is added, which increases its creaminess and energy value. It is ideal if you are looking for a filling food with a strong flavor and good caloric density.

Low-fat versions range between 2% and 5% fat, depending on the brand. These products are a balanced option for those who want to maintain a moderate caloric intake without giving up the flavor or texture of Greek yogurt.

Finally, fat-free or 0% Greek yogurt usually contains between 0% and 0.5% fat. This option is preferred in low-calorie diets or when you want to reduce fat intake without losing the yogurt’s protein content.

For comparison, conventional plain yogurt made with whole milk usually has between 2% and 4% fat, so whole Greek yogurt is significantly higher in fat.

The best choice will depend on your nutritional goals. For example, if you are looking for more satiety and energy, the most suitable option is whole Greek yogurt. On the other hand, if you want a balance between protein and slightly lower fat, you should choose low-fat Greek yogurt. Another alternative is fat-free yogurt, which is appropriate for those seeking a minimal fat intake.
