PITA STUFFED WITH SERRANO HAM AND VEGETABLES

Pita bread is a Mediterranean classic that can be filled with fresh, tasty ingredients. In this version, Serrano ham is combined with crunchy, colourful vegetables to create a light, nutritious and visually appealing dish. Ideal for quick lunches, snacks or picnics. Presentation is key: the ingredients are arranged so that they protrude from the bread, showing off their colours and textures. Here are some tips from Codina.

Prep Time15 minsTotal Time15 mins
Ingredients (serves 4)
4 pita breads (such as Mana Pan Pita)
150 g Serrano ham, thinly sliced
1 large handful of arugula or fresh lettuce, washed and drained
1 large cherry tomato, cut into halves or quarters
1/4 yellow bell pepper, cut into thin strips
 Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: one minced garlic clove or a pinch of fresh basil

Step-by-step preparation of stuffed pita bread

1

Prepare the ingredients

  1. Wash and dry the rocket or lettuce.
  2. Wash the cherry tomatoes and cut them in half.
  3. Cut the yellow pepper into thin strips.
  4. Separate the slices of Serrano ham into thin, flexible strips so that they can be rolled up inside the bread.

2

Open and fill the pita

  1. Carefully,  open each pita bread  along one side to form a ‘pocket’.
  2. Drizzle a little olive oil inside each pita and, if you like, add a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. First place the rocket or lettuce inside, creating a green and voluminous base.
  4. Add the cherry tomatoes and then the strips of yellow pepper, distributing them so that they are visible when you open the pita.
  5. Insert the strips of Serrano ham, allowing them to protrude slightly for a colourful and appetising presentation.
  6. Optional: a touch of chopped garlic or fresh basil on top for aroma.
3

 Serve and present

  1. Place the pitas on a wooden board or rustic plate.
  2. Ensure that the ingredients protrude from the bread so that it looks like the photo: green leaves at the base, rolled ham in the centre, and tomatoes/peppers on top.
  3. Drizzle a little olive oil on top for a shiny, fresh finish.

Presentation tips

For an even more professional effect, cut the pita diagonally and place it open in a ‘V’ shape or slightly tilted so that all the colours are visible. Serve immediately so that the lettuce and tomatoes retain their freshness and crunchy texture.

Stuffed pita variations

Pita bread is very versatile and can be adapted to suit a variety of tastes and seasons. You can vary the green base by using spinach, kale sprouts or even radicchio leaves for a more bitter and colourful touch. If you want to add a contrast of flavours, add thin slices of cucumber or grated carrot, which add freshness and crunchy texture. For those looking for extra protein, you can add strips of grilled chicken or spiced chickpeas to the filling. Cherry tomatoes can be replaced with rehydrated sun-dried tomatoes, adding a more intense flavour and an extra Mediterranean touch.

Serrano ham can be replaced with turkey, high-quality cooked ham or even a good cured cheese cut into thin strips, maintaining the combination of salty and fresh flavours. For spice lovers, a touch of freshly ground black pepper or a squeeze of lemon juice on top of the rocket intensifies the flavours. Don't forget that presentation makes all the difference: arranging the ingredients so that the colours are visible creates an appetising and eye-catching dish. Finally, accompany these pitas with a light salad or a yoghurt and herb dip for a complete and balanced lunch.
