Ingredients for puff pastry rolls
1 package Marie puff pastry dough
 200 g fresh spinach
150 g cream cheese (Philadelphia type)
50 g grated cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
 1 egg (for brushing)
 Salt and pepper to taste
 1 teaspoon olive oil
Preparation of puff pastry rolls
1

Prepare the filling. Wash and drain the spinach thoroughly. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and sauté the spinach for 3-4 minutes until tender. Remove from the heat, allow to cool slightly, and mix with the cream cheese and grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

2

Roll out the dough. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Unroll the Marie puff pastry and cut it into rectangles of the desired size for the rolls.

3

Fill the rolls. Place a tablespoon of filling in the center of each rectangle of puff pastry. Fold the dough into a roll or triangle, making sure to seal the edges well.

4

Bake. Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the surface with beaten egg so that they turn a nice golden brown. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

5

Serve. Allow to cool slightly before serving. These rolls can be enjoyed hot, fresh out of the oven, or warm, and are perfect as a healthy appetizer or snack.

Variations on savory fillings

Although the original recipe may be simple and delicious, you can get creative with different fillings:

  • Classic ham and cheese: combine slices of cooked ham with cheese that melts well (such as Gouda or Emmental) for a quick, family-friendly appetizer.
  • Spiced ground beef: sauté ground beef with onion, garlic, and your favorite spices before wrapping it in puff pastry for a more substantial bite.
  • Pepper, bacon, and cheese: mix chopped peppers with bacon and cheese for a crispy and juicy contrast.
  • Other combinations: sautéed mushrooms with cream cheese, spinach and ricotta, or even spiced lamb, are popular ideas for customizing your rolls.

Sweet options

Puff pastry rolls aren't limited to savory versions. With a little pastry cream, blueberry jam, or fruits such as apples and dulce de leche, you can create a sweet and tempting version for dessert or a snack.

Tips

  • Always brush with beaten egg before baking to achieve a golden color and shiny finish.

  • If the filling is very moist, drain it or cook it beforehand to prevent the pastry from softening during baking.

  • You can sprinkle seeds (sesame, poppy) or aromatic herbs on the rolls before baking for extra flavor and presentation.
