Our gourmet hot chocolate with Billington's spices and sugar is the perfect choice for those moments when you want to treat yourself to a touch of sophistication. Its enveloping aroma and intense flavour, combined with the sweet and slightly caramelised notes of natural cane sugar, make every sip a unique experience. Ideal for sharing with family, surprising your guests or simply treating yourself, this recipe elevates classic hot chocolate to a gourmet version that will be remembered.

Heat the milk over medium heat in a medium saucepan until it begins to steam but does not boil.
Add the chopped chocolate and stir constantly until it melts completely, obtaining a smooth and shiny mixture.
Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and pinch of salt, mixing well so that the spices are evenly distributed.
Add the Billington’s muscovado sugar and continue stirring until it is completely dissolved. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking.
Serve immediately in large cups and, if desired, decorate with whipped cream or marshmallows. For an extra gourmet touch, sprinkle a little more cinnamon or a light dusting of cocoa powder on top.
Everything you need to know about hot chocolate
Hot chocolate is much more than just a drink: it is a sensory experience that combines history, culture and culinary technique. Although the Codina Foods recipe you have just followed is a gourmet version with spices and natural cane sugar, traditional hot chocolate has deep roots in Spanish culture, where it is known as chocolate a la taza and is characterised by a thick, rich texture, almost like a sauce that is eaten with a spoon.
This drink, which dates back centuries—when cocoa arrived in Europe from the Americas—has been reinvented in many ways over time, from simpler recipes made with cocoa and milk to spiced versions or those enriched with cream, custard or different sweeteners. The key to truly delicious hot chocolate is to use quality ingredients: chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa will add depth and a more authentic flavour, while well-heated milk or plant-based milk allows the aromas to be released and blend harmoniously.
What's more, adding toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream or even a pinch of cinnamon to hot chocolate not only enhances its presentation, but also intensifies the drinking experience. For lovers of hot drinks, there are also versions flavoured with chilli or cardamom, which provide a surprising contrast between sweet and spicy.
