Is halloumi cheese hard to digest?

Halloumi cheese, whilst delicious thanks to its unique texture and its ability to resist melting when cooked, can be harder on the stomach than other fresh or mature cheeses if not eaten in moderation.

Why might it feel ‘heavy’?

  • Density and texture. Unlike feta, halloumi is a semi-hard, springy cheese. Its structure is much more compact, which means it takes the stomach longer to digest.
  • Fat and protein content. It has a high protein and fat content (approximately 25–30 per cent). This combination is excellent for satiety, but excessive intake in a single meal can slow down gastric emptying.
  • Cooking method. It is almost always eaten fried or grilled. The use of additional oils during preparation can increase the dish’s fat content, heightening that post-meal feeling of ‘heaviness’.
  • Lactose content. Although traditional Halloumi is made from sheep’s and goat’s milk (which have smaller, more easily digestible fat globules), it is not a matured cheese. It therefore retains more lactose than an aged cheese, which may affect people with a mild sensitivity to this sugar.

Tips for easier digestion

To enjoy halloumi without feeling bloated, at Codina Foods we recommend:

  1. Dry-frying. Make the most of its natural fat and cook it in a non-stick frying pan or on a grill without adding any extra oil.
  2. Acidic pairings. Serve it with acidic foods such as lemon juice, fresh tomatoes or a bed of rocket. The acid helps to ‘cut through’ the greasy sensation on the palate and stimulates gastric juices.
  3. Controlled portions. Due to its nutritional density, a portion of 50–80 grams is sufficient to enjoy its flavour and protein content without overloading the digestive system.
