Does Greek yogurt contain lactose?

Greek yogurt, despite being a dairy product, contains a lower amount of lactose compared to other products such as milk or regular yogurt.

Why is that? Mainly due to its manufacturing process, which includes an additional filtering stage. In this phase, much of the whey—where lactose is concentrated—is removed, resulting in a thicker product with fewer carbohydrates and higher nutritional density.

In addition to filtering, natural fermentation also plays an important role. The probiotic bacteria used in its production break down part of the lactose into simpler compounds, such as lactic acid, making it easier to digest. For this reason, many people with mild to moderate lactose intolerance can consume Greek yogurt without experiencing discomfort.

Although it is not completely lactose-free, its low content, approximately 2.5 to 4 grams per serving, makes it a viable option for many lactose-intolerant individuals. However, those with severe intolerance should opt for versions specifically labeled as “lactose-free,” in which the enzyme lactase has been added to fully break down this sugar.

Beyond its low lactose content, Greek yogurt offers other nutritional benefits:

  • It is rich in protein, provides calcium, vitamin B12, and contains probiotics that support digestive health.

  • Natural Greek yogurt is also low in sugars, making it an excellent choice within a balanced diet.

  • It has a creamy texture and versatility, so it can be easily incorporated into breakfasts, snacks, or used as a base for both savory and sweet recipes.

  • It promotes satiety, making it a good option for those looking to control appetite or maintain a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing flavor.
